Kyle Pulver recently released a video showcasing the stages of development of his game Bonesaw: The Game. Genuinelly interesting to see how the game was done, and how things changed from the early stages.

Surprised me to see that the main character was fluently animimated from the early stages of the game.

That was actually pretty nice to see from start to finish and I really liked the NES styling of the game.
When I’m working on a game, I tend to follow a similar process of getting the core game play down, making sure that the basic game play mechanic is fun (without any flash graphics or audio that could distract you) and slowly adding features to the game until it is a full rounded game. It’s really important for any game no matter how small and simple it may be to have plenty of time in the beginning of the project just for getting that core game play element(s) right. Ultimately, the game will stand or fall on its game play and control. Everything else after that is just polish.
At the other end of the scope of course, you have to be careful that you don’t start adding to many new features to the game, where it can get to the point of there’s that many features that you lose sight of the main game play mechanic (I’ve personally made that mistake a couple of times before).

Cheers,
Mike.
